Tool Tales in the ArtifactLAB

From 12-3 on the second Saturday of each month from April-August

If you've ever wondered about a specialty tool from your grandfather's workshop, an interesting one you found at a yard sale or simply want to learn more about the tools in your collection, this event is for you. Our panel of knowledgeable CRAFTS of NJ (Collectors of Rare and Familiar Tool Society of NJ) volunteers will be in the ArtifactLAB helping to identify tools from the museum's collection but will also volunteer their time to carefully examine the items you bring in, helping you uncover the stories behind them.

Learn about the origins of our tools and/or yours, who crafted them, where they were made, and the ways they were used throughout history. With decades of combined experience, they will also offer insights into the broader history of craftsmanship and how these tools fit into the larger family of hand tools.

While our panel isn't made up of certified appraisers, they can provide you with an informed estimate of each tool's potential value, based on their extensive knowledge and hands-on experience. Whether you're curious about a rare item or simply passionate about the art of craftsmanship, Tool Tales promises an afternoon of learning, sharing, and discovering the fascinating world of tools!

Bring your own discoveries, share your family stories, and deepen your appreciation for the tools that shaped history.

Poetry Reading

Friday June 12 5:30-8 pm

Poets who have contributed to Convergence: Poetry on Environmental Impacts of War will be reading selections from the anthology.

This collection offers a vital perspective that has rarely been considered: war's destruction of the more than human environment. Arranged more or less chronologically, 90 poems and their contextual notes by 61 contemporary poets bring into vivid focus the eco-injustice of military damages in 37 nations on 6 continents and on the moon.

Join us for a lovely riverside reading and reception on Friday June 12th starting at 5:30. Immediately following this event, Boy Scout Troop #121 will conduct a formal U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony on the Red Mill Museum Village grounds.

Salute to Service

Saturday June 13

The Red Mill Museum Village invites the community to a meaningful Flag Day Weekend celebration at our annual Salute to Service on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 11 AM-3 PM. Honoring veterans, active service members, and the families who support them, this year's event also recognizes 250 years of American service and resilience, while acknowledging the contributions of first responders who serve their communities. The day's centerpiece is the Quilt of Valor Ceremony, held following the noon 21-Gun Salute and Echo Taps presented by Spruce Run VFW Post #5119, where handcrafted quilts will be awarded to local veterans in a moving tribute of gratitude and honor.

Textile traditions take center stage as part of the museum's participation in Handwork 2026, a nationwide celebration of American craft during the Semiquincentennial. Patriotic quilts will be displayed throughout the village, and we will celebrate the opening of The Intimacy of Quilts, highlighting the artistry and stories woven into textile heritage. The weekend also marks the debut of the Peace Flag Project, inviting reflection on unity, hope, and the handmade as expressions of national identity.

The celebration continues with live music by the Whitehouse Wind Symphony from 1-3 PM, participation from military veteran and first responders' organizations, children's activities, and special programming at the museum's historic log cabin, celebrating its 50th anniversary. Visitors can also explore Jack Stanley's Civil War artifact exhibition throughout the weekend and contribute to the museum's Digital Wall of Heroes. The event is held rain or shine with regular museum admission; free entry is offered to members, children under six, veterans, and active-duty military. Jack Stanley's exhibition remains on view Sunday, June 14, for a meaningful Father's Day weekend visit.

Mill to Mill Peace Flag Project

Exhibit Opening June 14 at 12 pm

The Hunterdon Art Museum and the Red Mill Museum Village are proud to announce Mill to Mill, a collaborative initiative celebrating traditional and contemporary craft practices in recognition of the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. Community members have been invited to create peace flags at museum-sponsored events and workshops or on their own.

Nearly 1,200 answered the call and expressed their visions of peace through creative self-expression. As the flags weather in the elements, their hopes, reflections and aspirations will be carried outward, while the permanent digital exhibit preserves the stories behind each creation in the makers' own words.

Celebrate the opening of this historic exhibit with remarks, poetry, blessings, a meditation and music on the antique Pony Pratt Truss bridge at noon. Activities will be offered at both the Red Mill Museum Village and the Hunterdon Art Museum after the ceremony. The exhibit will be on display through the end of August.

Rug Hooking School

Saturday, June 27 2026, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Rug Hooking School at the Red Mill Museum Village offers a small-group, hands-on introduction to the craft, history and techniques of traditional rug hooking. Designed for beginners, this single-session class focuses on building a strong foundation through guided instruction from the Hunterdon County Rug Artisans Guild and active practice.
Students will begin hooking a simple heart design on an 8" x 10" linen backing, learning the essential techniques and rhythm of this historic fiber art. Instruction emphasizes developing the skills needed to continue working independently, rather than completing the mat during class. Each participant will leave with their project underway and all the materials needed to finish it at home.
Location: Administration Building Meeting Room at the Red Mill Museum Village
Cost: $130 per person (includes all materials) plus $25 registration fee (waived for current museum members)
Capacity: Limited for individualized instruction

Mill to Mill Textile Fellowship

Fridays, ongoing

The Mill to Mill Textile Fellowship invites makers of all experience levels to gather in community and explore the rich traditions of textile craft. As part of Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, the Fellowship honors the diverse fiber arts that have shaped our nation's cultural heritage.

The Fellowship meets most Fridays from 1-3 PM, alternating between the Red Mill Museum Village and the Hunterdon Art Museum. Participants bring any hand-based textile work-crochet, knitting, weaving, spinning, embroidery, hand sewing, lacemaking, or other fiber arts-and work side by side in a supportive, skill-sharing environment.

Members exchange ideas, offer guidance, and celebrate the creativity that emerges when artisans come together. To find out when and where the next meeting will be held, please email Curator of Education Robbie-Lynn Mwangi at educator@theredmill.org

Friends of the Red Mill 2026 Schedule

The group helps with a variety of tasks, from staffing the museum shop and assisting with special events to volunteering on numerous preservation and community projects. Their efforts help ensure that the historic Red Mill continues to be an accessible and engaging part of the local community.

In addition to their volunteer work, the Friends of the Red Mill host free monthly meetings open to the public. These gatherings feature guest speakers, presentations, light refreshments, and a chance to socialize with fellow history enthusiasts. It's a relaxed and welcoming way for anyone interested to learn more about the museum and the mill's history.
