Docent-led Tours
A docent-led tour of the Red Mill Museum Village can help your Scouts relive the stories of the hard-working men and women who settled this area and the obstacles they encountered. Learn how communities pooled their resources as individuals began to specialize in trades like blacksmithing or weaving. Envision the dangerous life of a nineteenth century Irish quarryman as he pounds rocks with a sledge hammer and blasts limestone from the cliff with dynamite. Picture the miller and his laborers harnessing the power of the water as gears, pulleys and belts turn grinding stones.
Meet the Craftsmen
At our museum you will be able to see a Blacksmith demonstration as he hammers hooks and nails on his anvil in the hot glow of his forge. Or you can take part in one of our many workshops, including candle and basket-making, carding wool, or writing with a feather pen and ink. These demonstrations and activities are available by special arrangement.
Earn Badges and Patches
The Museum’s staff can also help design specific workshops for your Scouts that will help them earn various merit badges and patches.
Eagle Scout and Gold Award Projects
The Red Mill Museum Village is always excited to partner with Scouts and provide opportunities for projects that will help them earn their Eagle Scout or Gold Awards. In the past, we have had Scouts construct the brick floor in the Blacksmith Shop, design, plant and maintain an herb garden next to our Log Cabin, and reconstruct and paint the Carriage Sheds and School House.
Historic Reenactments
Consider bringing your Scout group of ten or more and enjoy discounts to the Museum’s Special Event Weekends that include historic reenactments. Meet the soldiers and witness camp life and weapons demonstrations from Civil War or Revolutionary War times. Watch, as ladies dressed in beautiful period clothing, offer demonstrations in spinning, weaving, and open-hearth cooking. See our Events page for dates and times.
